GREAT SALT LAKEThis project came about after reading the NYT article “Utah’s Environmental Nuclear Bomb” It occurred to me that even though I was born and raised never more than 45 minutes from the Great Salt Lake, I knew next to nothing about it, aside from the common prejudice that it was a brackish cesspool full of bugs and dead birds.
After reading that article, I was pulled by morbid curiosity to look at the ticking time bomb myself, and what I found filled me with exhilaration, awe, and panic. I discovered the indescribable and nuanced beauty that exists in this particularly harsh and capricious environment, and I felt a desire to find my own way to advocate for the preservation of this precious habitat.
That pursuit led me into some of the many eccentric and exciting communities that thrive on or around the Great Salt Lake that range from rowing, sailing, swimming, hunting, biking, art-making, and so, so much more. Some of these images were featured in an article I wrote for Friends of Great Salt Lake in the winter of 2025.
